Andreas Schelfhout (Dutch Andreas Schelfhout; born February 16, 1787, The Hague - April 19, 1870, ibid.) - Dutch
landscape painter.

A. Schelfhout was a student of the theatrical artist Johannes Breckenheimer, but landscape painting became the main theme of his works. At the age of 28, recognition came to him after creating the “Winter Landscape”. Winter landscapes, in addition to the views of their native Netherlands, have always attracted the artist's attention.
Andreas received a gold medal at the 1819 exhibition in Antwerp.
Summer scenes, beach scenes, moonlight landscapes, or animal paintings were his first works. But when he saw that his winter scenes were more successful, he began to work in this direction. He was amazed, as a romantic artist, by the strength of nature.

He painted mainly in his studio, but at first, he did
outdoor sketches. He kept these sketches in his book
Liber Veritatis (Book of Truth). It can be concluded that he wrote
about twenty paintings a year, bought as private
collectors and collectors of the royal house. This book
about 79 paintings, of which there are 33 Dutch landscapes, 24
winter scenes, beach scenes.

Schelfhout belongs to romanticism and is known as a harbinger of the Hague School. His style is inspired by themes from the works of Hobbes and Ruisdael. Especially winter and icy landscapes with skaters were already very famous during his life. He became one of the most influential Dutch landscape painters of his century.
Schelfhout was the teacher of J. Jongkind, Jan Willem van Borselen, Licaert, Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn, Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom and his son Wijnand Nuijen. It is unfair to think that J.H.Weissenbruchstraat was also his student.
