Origin of paintings

Van Ravenswaay was the son of cotton mill owner Cornelis van Ravenswaay and Marita de Blinde. At the age of 14, Van Ravenswaay was an apprentice drawing master Jordanus Hoorn from Amersfoort. Then he continued his education with the artist Pieter Gerardus van Os, who lived in St. Graveland first and then in Hilversum.

After his studies, Van Ravenswaay made study trips to Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. When he returned to Hilversum, he began teaching. Among his students were Fredrik Marinus Cruzeman and Albert Stinbergen.

From 1839 to 1847, Van Ravenswaay lived with his family in Drenthe. He created many landscapes, including drawings for Drentse Volksalmanak during this period. The painting «View of Assen» (1841) by order of former governor Daniel van Evik dates from this period.
