Jan Mandijn, “Landscape with the Legend of St. Christopher”

Jan Mandijn, “Landscape with the Legend of St. Christopher”
Jan Mandijn (1500/1502, Haarlem - 1559/1560, Antwerp) - Dutch artist of the Renaissance and Northern Mannerism.
The painting is on display at the State Hermitage Museum.
“Landscape with the Legend of St. Christopher” was repeatedly restored in the 18-19th centuries.

The most unpleasant thing that happened to the painting is the loss of the base at the junction of the oak panel boards. The paint layer was under a thick layer of dark varnish, all the colors changed and degraded.

The restoration commission of the State Hermitage decided to clear the original painting from late layers and dark varnish. The work was carried out according to the methodology of the State Hermitage's Easel Oil Painting Restoration Workshop.

After cleaning, retouching of darkened layers, the painting regained the state of the artist's color concept and began to sparkle with bright and deep colors.
