From 1849 to 1852, he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts. There, he was a student in Johann Wilhelm Schirmer’s landscape painting class, and later followed him to Karlsruhe. From 1850 to 1853, he was a member of the Malkasten Artists’ Association.[2] In 1855, he went to Paris.
